Maria Montessori was was the first woman in Italy to earn a degree in medicine, she later went on to teach children. Through her observations, she developed the Montessori method which was based on sensory materials that allowed children to develop experiences with all their senses. Children were allowed to experiment with the materials once they had been shown how to use them, often learning from each other.
